Prize winners
Congratulations to the thousands of children who completed the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge (in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA) 2011/2012.
Special congratulations to Jonathan Vagg from Gooseberry Hill Primary School who is the lucky winner of the major prize. Jonathan and his family have won a holiday to explore WA, valued at $6,000 thanks to QBE Insurance.
Hundreds of other children also won prizes in the random draw that was held on 20 February. See below to find out if you are one of the lucky prize winners.
Thank you to everyone who helped fundraise more than $21,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA. The funds will help support Western Australians living with multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders.
Katelyn Johns from Kingsway Christian College was the top fundraiser, collecting an impressive $1,190. She was among the top ten fundraisers who were recognised at a special morning tea with the Premier at Parliament House.
All children who fundraised more than $100 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA will receive a small gift.
Everyone who participated in the Challenge will receive a letter and certificate signed by the Premier.
Certificates and prizes will be posted out by the end of March.
We would also like to acknowledge the Challenge sponsors – QBE Insurance, Fremantle Press and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Australia – for providing an outstanding range of prizes.

Thousands of kids design bookmarks
As part of this year’s Challenge Bosko invited all Western Australian kids from Kindergarten to Year 7 to get creative and design their own bookmark.

There were two categories: Kindergarten to Year 3 and Year 4 to Year 7.
Bosko received more than 3,000 colourful and creative bookmark designs from children all across Western Australia.
Kaden Prowse from Swanbourne Primary School and Taylor Anderson from Newman Primary School won for their colourful bookmarks which both featured Challenge mascot Bosko exploring the State.
This year was the first time students were asked to design a bookmark about reading and this year’s Challenge theme “Explore Western Australia”.
Both Kaden and Taylor will have their winning designs professionally printed and sent to libraries across WA and distributed to ‘Challengers’. They will also receive signed copies of James Foley’s book The Last Viking and their classmates will receive a Challenge pack.
Western Australian Fremantle Press illustrator and cartoonist James Foley was on the panel of judges and said thousands of entries were received from children in Kindergarten to Year 7 from all over the State.
“There are a lot of talented young illustrators out there. Some students used crayon, some used watercolour pencils, some used collage. It was very tough to pick a winner out of so many great entries,” he said.
“It was great to see everyone’s different ideas and illustration styles.”
James said competitions like the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge were so important because they encouraged students to read during their free time.
“There are lots of other things you can do with your time – TV, video games, etc – but they can’t give you what books give you,” he said.
“When you’re watching TV or playing a video game, it’s all ready-made for you, and your brain doesn’t have to do anything. Your brain takes a holiday. But when you read a book, you have to actively create a world inside your head; it helps you develop your imagination. It’s like exercise for your brain.”
As a number of excellent Bookmark Challenge entries were received, a highly commended winner has been announced from each school. Highly commended winners will receive certificates. Click here to see a list of highly commended winners.
